Module 3: Digital Literacy: Cybersecurity

In Module 3 we discussed Digitial Literacy and being knowledgeable and mindful when it comes to cybersecurity and the internet. It is important to know the basics of Internet Safety, so you are protected from the sharing your personal data and getting virus on your software.

 Internet Safety Takeaways:

1.) Introduction to Internet Safety - The internet is a reliable source for many for communicating and accessing internet. Being mindful of the risks and how to avoid them will keep you safe.

2.) Creating Strong Passwords- You will need a password with each account online you have. You will want to make your password strong. No names, pet names, popular names or personal information. Use long words with letters and special characters and no patterns.

3.) Browser Security Features- Always confirm the site you want to use before searching, that way you make sure you are accessing a trusted site. Alot of the times you'll get a warning that there is malware.

4.) Avoid Spam and Phishing- Spam is usually filtered into your spam folder already by the provider you are using, but you still need to be cautious and read who they are from and what they are.

5.) Avoid Malware- Most common, easy to avoid. Being knowledgeable about securing your computer will help you protect your computer.

6.) Safe Online Shopping - Easiest way to buy online. Fast and reliable. Protect your care information and use your own internet and use secure methods.

7.) Understanding Browser Tracking- Your internet history is saved in little bits of data that are cookies and this is saving as a tracking cookie and the sites remember you,

8.) Social Media Privacy Basics- Be mindful of what you are sharing online and who you are sharing it with and once you share it you cannot take it back.

9.) What to do if your computer gets a virus- If you get a virus, it is easy to get or find the software to safely remove the. Make sure everything is up to data and be safe with what you access and download.

10.) Installing and updating browser plug-ins- Plug ins need to be updated to stay up to do within other applications being used on a computer.

11.) Phone Verification- Best way to verify identify.

12.) Wi-Fi Security- Using your own wi-fi is the safest. Make it secure do not share it and make strong password with a weaker signal so you are harder to access.

13.) Driving safely with mobile devices- The safest way to drive is with no phone and if you do, then hands free.

Ticket Master Hack of 2024

In May of 2024 there was a data breech with Ticketmaster that affected about 560 million people, stealing personal data.  People were affected across the US, Canada and Mexico. Information that was access was names, addresses, phone numbers, emails, ticket information that was being purchased and even credit card information.

The breach happened because there was unauthorized access from a third party which is being stated from most likely Snowflake although they have denied any involvement.

No amount has been disclosed for what was taken as a financial loss.
The Shiny Hunters was the name of the group who is responsible and asking for ransom of 500,000 to not leak the data that they have. This wasn't the first time TicketMaster has been hacked, it was before back in 2020.

In Module 3 I learned a lot. I learned about Data breeches, security threats and identity theft. These were significant to me in this module because it really opened my eyes to internet safety. Some things that I needed to hear again or get the knowledge about.

The muddiest point for me this module I think would have been understanding all the key terms and vocab in this chapter and keeping them straight. I understand now what they mean. For instance, Malware, I had no idea and its short for malicious software, and that alone helps understand what it means.

What I will do differently is I will be more secure when using the internet. I think the main thing is my personal information with purchasing things online and putting my information out there. I have before fallen into scams while purchasing online and this module helped me understand the major importance of internet safety.

Module 3 Vocab

Cybersecurity is the practice of protecting computers, networks, systems, and data from unauthorized access, attacks, damage, or theft.

Malware is any software designed to harm, exploit, or otherwise compromise a computer system, network, or user data.

A virus is a type of malware that attaches itself to legitimate files or programs and spreads to other systems when those files are shared or opened. It can corrupt or delete data and disrupt system operations.

Spyware is a type of malware that secretly monitors a user's activity and collects information without their knowledge or consent.

Phishing is a cyberattack method where attackers trick people into revealing sensitive information by pretending to be a trustworthy entity, often via email or fake websites.

This module I did put the time in that was needed. I do keep missing the KAHOOTS, I need to pay better attention to that.
